Foundation of Catanauan
The existence of Catanauan as a pueblo (town) was first recorded in the map of father Pedro Murillo dated 1734. The Petition dated 1685 of Bishop Andres Gonzales of Nueva Caceres, Naga City requesting the King of Spain to have Masbate and the Pueblo of Catanauan assigned to Recollect Order was reflective of the early creation of Catanauan. The recognized foundation year of the Municipality was 1713 called as Nabatasan. [Source: wikipedia.org]

Origin of Catanauan During the early part of the 17th century, there were frequent Moro (now Muslim) raids so Catanauan folks erected two small stone forts or watchtowers mounted with heavy and small artillery, both properly manned where they can easily see each other or called in local dialect “Magkatanawan”. There is where the name “Catanauan” was derived. The first watchtower called “Sta Maria’ was constructed near the place where the present municipal wharf is located. The second one, which stood in the intersection of what are now Rizal and Boncan streets, was called the “Castillo”.[Source: GTSI]

Legend of Catanauan During the latter part of the eighteenth century, Spanish galleon frequented this place. One of the commanders of the ship was Spanish navigator, named Manuel del Gallego. During his voyage, he caught sight of an island a very white beach reflecting along the horizon. Anxious to discover a land, the captain of the ship landed on it. Gallego then hastily reported to his companion that this would be a nice place to settle upon. So he traced it on the map. It is in the Central part of Banton Island, Marinduque and Romblon. Due to its favorable location he named it ‘MAGTANAUAN’ later on with the coming of the American in the early part of the nineteenth century ‘KA’ was affixed to Tanuan naming it ‘CATANAUAN’ this is the legend of this town.[Source:www.catanauan.net]

bayutbutin
lagabong
suyusoy

at marami pang iba.

A.Pisikal: porma, tunog, punto (accent), at gamit sa pangungusap

C.Naunang Mamamayan: Ita (o Bisayang/Bikolanong Ita?)

A.Ang pokus ng hakbang na ito ay nauukol lamang (muna) sa paglilikom ng mga salitang Catanauanin;

B.Matapos malikom ang 80% ng mga salita, ihahambing ang mga ito at ang mga kahulugan sa ilang mga dayalekto mula sa kalapit-lalawigan at iba pang rehiyon;

C.Pansamantalang isasantabi ang ilang bahagi na may kaugnayan sa kasaysayan ng mga unang mamamayan, kultura, iba pa;

2. ibibigay ang kahulugan (Filipino-English) sa salitang-ambag;

CATANAUAN COVE - A hidden paradise along the coast of Catanauan's Tayabas Bay...

There is a new get-away destination in town - CATANAUAN COVE which is located in Sitio Paraiso, Brgy. Cutcutan, Catanauan Quezon. This 11-hectare world-class white sand beach and farm resorts boast one kilometer stretch of fine white sand, crystal clear waters, hilly terrain, lush forests and surrounding azure waters.

The property is fashioned after “modern interpretation” by Architect Nilo Salto of the Philippine “NIPA HUT” cottages. This paradise is a perfect hub and “get-away” off - city life for nature loving people, who desire to gift themselves with fulfilling comfort and relaxation. The “Catanauan Cove” is similarly ideal for corporate activities, team building seminars, spiritual retreats, weddings, parties and other personal or official events.

Existing and future facilities based on the resorts' master development plan is designed to provide vacationing families with practically all they need in just one place - Pavillions, restaurants, Infinity Pool, Sports and recreation areas, childrens playground, Animal farm and botanical garden among others.
Infinity pool will be compeleted by August, while the villas and cottages are continuously being constructed. A huge statue of the risen Christ, surrounded by the 14 stations of the cross, is also plan to be erected on top of the hill at the 2.9-hectares tail end of the property.
CatanauanPortal.Com first learned about Catanauan Cove late last year, but it was only lately that we were able to have communication with ATTY. BENEDICTO (BUDDY) JAVIER, President & CEO of JEJ GROUP OF COMPANIES - the developer of Catanauan Cove - and to our delight, he gave us time to answer them - of course by email only.

CatanauanPortal: As we browse the website, it seems like there is a membership and some Catanaunins are wondering about this. Is the resort open to public (or non-members), especially to locals (Catanauanin)?

ATTY. BENEDICTO JAVIER: Certainly, the resort is open to all and most especially to the locals. The limited membership concept merely provides the members the opportunity to participate in the business by being one of only 50 earning members. As such members they have special privileges and rebates from the rooms / cottages or villas assigned to them based on their membership of choice. They may earn between 20%, 30% or as high as 35% of the the gross room rate charge or villa charge adopted during a certain period.
The priority for membership slots will of course be the "catanauanins", on a "first come-first reserve" basis. I have attached the revised membership options and available slots and the corresponding earning percentage as well as the revised master development plan showing the lots (initially at phase 2)likewise available for sale. Non-earning members of just 200 will be accomodated at very affordable prices.
Check the (you will need Adobe Reader) RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES OF A REGULAR MEMBER(as of MAy 24, 2010) or contact Catanauan Cove for more details.
CatanauanPortal: As of the moment, what sort of facilities can the visitors enjoy/use?

ATTY. BENEDICTO JAVIER: We already have the following: atvs; horseback-riding; beach football; beach volleyball; beach badminton; basketball court; tennis court; boating; kayak; snorkeling and soon, scuba-diving. (To show that we prioritize the locals) we also have a fine-dining restaurant operated by the owner of Alfredo's, a convenience store operated by a former brgy captain of cutcutan; a grill house operated by the resort's staff mostly from cutcutan or catanauan; elegant family cottages with aircon, hot and cold water, nice and big beds, and soon to have each a television set and telephone or inhouse intercom.
The pavillion is so unique and favulous as it is designed with tropical character. We now have honeymooner cottages apart from the family cottages. 2-Bedroom and 3-bedroom villas as well as duplexes, dormitories are now being constructed. The infinitypool and all these are expected to be available by september of 2010 or earlier. The resort will eventually have 2 pool within the main resort, and another pool at the residential area (phase 2).  Phase 2 is envisioned to have a high-rise hotel (possibly with mini casino to attract foreign guests). Likewise, phase 2 is now selling 39 low land residential lots and just 16 lots "on top of the hill with ocean view", all with lot cut of 200 sqm at very low prices to make them affordable for the locals and even the ofws. At the tail end (phase 3), it is envisioned to be the solemn place for all, with a statue of the risen christ, surrounded by the 14 stations of the cross, garden parks and just 20 2-storey and elegant residential houses on top of the hill with ocean view.

CatanauanPortal: What are the amenities in the room? How big is the room?

ATTY. BENEDICTO JAVIER: You do not have to worry about the ro0ms' size as the smallest room is 30 sqm with two big beds and fully airconditioned, with hot and cold water. Elegantly designed at that, we will furnish the same with inhouse intercoms, tv (just waiting the confirmation of cable connections), refs for honeymooners, and villas, and perhaps dvd players if the cable tv companies cannot provide what we need for each room.

CatanauanPortal: When is the projected completion of all the facilities in the resort?

ATTY. BENEDICTO JAVIER: Most of the facilities within the main resort will be available by september this year to wit: duplexes, honeymooners, dorms, villas, infinity pool, over and above those mentioned already as available. The residential area is subject to discretion of lot buyers as to when they should construct their respective houses, likewise with phase 3. But as to the risen christ and the 14 stations of the cross, we will do our very best to complete before the next holyweek.
On the hotel within phase 2, we are now negotiating with investors from Manila.

CatanauanPortal: Would there be a service/shuttle bus that would pick guests from lucena city once the resort is completely finished?

ATTY. BENEDICTO JAVIER: Certainly this is one of the targeted allied services by the company as soon as the main resort is completed. This is a must. We are also finalizing tie-ups with large travel agencies to arrange package tours for manila and international tourists, with transports and food already included whether it be a short (2 nights and 3 days stay) or longer (a week's stay).

CatanauanPortal: How to make a reservation?

ATTY. BENEDICTO JAVIER: At the moment, reservations are done at the manila office through the numbers: 09175204681 / 09193310476 / 09189917099 / 0915783736 or landline: 6325673461 (manila).
Bookings may also be done in advance at the resort itself. Very soon, there will be a booking office in lucena and of course at catanauan town to cover the towns beyond catanauan.

Check the rates here at (you will need Adobe Reader) Summer Promo Rates of Catanauan Cove for 2010 (please note that we receive this promo rate as of April 12, 2010).

So what are you waiting for? Explore and discover hidden paradise in the coast of Catanauan's Tayabas Bay!!

We would like to thank Atty Benedicto Javier for the time he gave us and to our official photographer, Eddie Quizada of Ishot Studio for the photos.

The Catanauan Central School

The Catanauan Central School (CCS) which is conviniently located some few steps away from Catanauan Rotonda - the gateway to the poblacion, can be considered as one of the oldest institution in Catanauan.

Panoramic view of Catanauan Central School - better known as "pablik" to the locals. The building in the center is called the "Boncan Building". Its huge ground is sometimes use as helicopter landing pad (of course you need to get a permission), and just recently the first ever BonPen(Bondoc Peninsula) Festival was held here. Photo courtesy of Mr. Jojo Valleza.
Going back to its history- as shared to us by Mr. Mahnel Forneste, an elementary school head teacher:

"In 1901, an American patrol arrived and organized the local Government, appointing Cirilo de Imus as president. In the intervening year some more American army unit came over together with an American school teacher who organized the Catanauan Elementary School for thier children.

The school started with only few average students. Mr.Allen Morris, the first American teacher, formerly called it Catanauan Primary School with a population of 30 students. The school was an old building owned by Cirilo de Ymus, then town mayor or president ('Cabeza' in those times). In 1940 the school increased its population composing of 30 classes. The teachers coming from the city were only high school graduates."

CCS students during the Art Contest with left wing of Boncan Building behind them(1985). Photo courtesy of Mrs. Ramela Barlizo Ramirez.

Although it's name is "Catanauan Central School", locals usually call this school as "Pablik (public in english)" - probably because its is a public or government run school.

With its long presence in the history of Catanauan, CCS has produced many graduates who are now excelling (or who excelled ) in thier own fields in and outside the country.

There is one new building added between the main gate and the secondary gate along Nabatasan St, it was completed in 2003 - as shown in this picture. (Photo courtesy of Mr. Glen Paz).

Many locals cherish their childhood memories they spent in this school.

I, for one - your humble CatanauanPortal.com founder- is an alumnus (batch'87) of this school and in fact one of those students in the Art Contest photo above. There are so much to say about my elementary days here such as exchange gifts during Christmas parties; playing and singing in the school ground with friends; field demonstration on August 19 (Quezon Day) or Town fiesta; my favorite subjects then - Agriculture under Mr. Rosaria, Industrial Arts with Mr. Avila and my Math class under Mrs Uy (grade V)/Mrs. Portes (grade VI) and so many others ..

Memories of pablik reminds me of the creamy "scramble" - a cold treat from crushed ice mixed with milk, sugar and some flavoring - ni Kang Johhny and "snowball" ni kang Pons. Of course their stalls are not there in the side of the main gate anymore ...

** CatanauanPortal would like to thank to Mrs. Ramela Barlizo Ramirez, Mr. Jojo Valleza, Mr. Glen Paz, Mr. Lorenzo DL Forneste and Mr. Mahnel Forneste for thier valuable inputs and photo's in this article.

MANILA, Philippines - The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations today launched a project to help fisherfolks, farmers and workers in Bondoc Peninsula to address extreme poverty, inequality, social unrest and armed conflict.
In partnership with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPPAP), the project dubbed as “Inter-agency Programme to Nurture Peace, Security and Decent Work through Local Development in Conflict Areas of The Philippines (Bondoc Peninsula),” will cover the four municipalities of Mulanay, San Narciso, Unisan and Catanauan.
Ms Linda Wirth, Director of the ILO Subregional Office based in Manila explains, “Decent work is what is needed for poor people to escape the clutches of poverty, especially when they are living in conflict-affected areas with scarce opportunities and services.”
She stressed that in order to break the vicious cycle of poverty, people must work together to develop their own place. The central strategy of the project is local economic development and peace-building processes that puts a premium on directly addressing human security deficits. Capacity-based approach aims to expand their livelihood assets and increase productivity through participatory dialogue and institutional strengthening activities both at the community and local government levels.
A total of at least 3,500 women and men are expected to benefit from the project. This includes proper seed production and storage; integrated farming systems; organic farming; integrated pests management; improved poultry and livestock production; proper harvest and post-harvest practices and support to sustainable fishing methodologies.

Another 2,500 individuals will be given complementary off-farm livelihood assistance, market linkage support and entrepreneurial and technical vocational skills training. The project also targets 2,000 mothers and children from the four municipalities to benefit from better health services through improved maternal and child care programs.
Mulanay Municipal Mayor Prudencio Maxino expressed his gratitude to ILO and FAO for choosing Bondoc Peninsula, “I am elated over the project. It’s a welcome development because it reinforces my administration’s efforts to reduce poverty and uphold peace in our locality. The project is promising because it is very well-planned and takes-off from the resource capacity of our constituents, and we are determined to do our part to get it implemented”.

In a bid to help farmers, fishermen and workers in conflict-affected areas in Quezon province, two United Nations agencies have launched a $2.5-million program to nurture peace, security and decent work.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)’s program have partnered with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process for the project, according to a release posted on the ILO website.

“People cannot get themselves out of poverty without decent work. It is even harder for people living in conflict-affected areas with limited access to livelihood, health care, education and other economic resources," said Linda Wirth, Director of the ILO Subregional Office in Manila.

Funded by the Japanese government through the UN Trust Fund for Human Security, the program aims to address extreme poverty and inequality as the root causes of social unrest and armed conflict in Bondoc Peninsula in Quezon province.

It also looks at promoting decent work for the disadvantaged through local economic development, to complement the national government’s peace-building and agrarian reform efforts.

“Breaking this vicious cycle [of poverty in conflict-affected areas] by bringing stakeholders to work together for local development is crucial to reduce the number of working poor, cope better with climate change and address the root causes of conflict," Wirth added.

The project will be implemented over a three-year period starting March 2010.

At least 80 percent of the population in the region depends on farming and fishing activities earning not more than $1 (P46) per day, the UN noted.

“Quezon province is essentially an agricultural economy. Restoring, rehabilitating and further improving farming and fishing activities in the affected communities are prerequisites for a lasting peace and long term economic development in the province," said Kazuyuki Tsurumi, FAO Representative in the Philippines.

Fishers, farmers and workers in the informal economy are priority groups among the disadvantaged populations identified.

Through the project, women and men, including young people, will benefit from assistance to improve agricultural production and fisheries.

The project will also provide alternative livelihood and entrepreneurial skills development and strengthen community-based disaster risk management.

Also, women and children from four priority towns, namely Mulanay, San Narciso, Unisan and Catanauan on Bondoc Peninsula, will benefit from improved maternity and child care programs of their respective local governments.—JMA/JV, GMANews.TV
